The Garrotxa, the Iberian Peninsula's most spectacular volcanic landscape
The Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park is the best-preserved volcanic field on the Iberian Peninsula. With over 40 extinct volcanoes, the landscape is unique: lush beech forests growing on volcanic cones and world-class gastronomy (Les Cols, 2 Michelin stars).
The Fageda d'en Jordà
The beech woodland growing on volcanic lava, immortalised by poet Joan Maragall. In autumn, the yellow and red leaves against the green moss create a unique visual spectacle. Free access all year round.
The volcanoes: Santa Margarida and Croscat
Santa Margarida Volcano: The only volcano in Europe with a hermitage inside the crater. 30-minute climb from the car park.
Croscat Volcano: The largest volcano on the Iberian Peninsula (160 metres high).
Olot and Besalú
Olot is the Garrotxa capital. Besalú, 12 km away, has one of Catalonia's finest medieval centres, with a spectacular 12th-century Romanesque bridge.
