What is Girona Temps de Flors?
Girona, Temps de Flors is the most important flower festival on the Iberian Peninsula and one of the most celebrated in Europe. Every spring, for nine days, Girona Barri Vell (Old Town) is transformed into an open-air museum where medieval architecture and ephemeral floral art coexist in perfect harmony. Streets, inner courtyards, cloisters, staircases, churches and gardens — many of them normally closed to the public — open their doors to host hundreds of floral installations created by artists, associations, businesses and individuals from across Catalonia and the world.
In 2026 the festival celebrates its 71st edition. Its history begins in 1954 with a modest flower exhibition at Girona Municipal Theatre. That small, local showcase has evolved into an international cultural phenomenon attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors in nine days, placing Girona alongside Chelsea (London) and Floralia (Ghent, Belgium) among Europe's great floral events.
But Temps de Flors is more than a flower show. It is, above all, a different way to discover Girona: the festival takes you off the standard tourist circuit and into hidden corners, medieval passages, private courtyards and heritage spaces that remain closed for the other 356 days of the year.
71st edition: dates and highlights 2026
The 2026 edition runs from 9 to 17 May 2026 inclusive. The official opening takes place on Saturday 9 May at 11.30 am at the Jardins dels Alemanys. This year's edition presents 141 floral installations across 113 venues.
Key new features for 2026:
- Sant Feliu Bridge decorated with flowers for the first time.
- Gaudí Year exhibition inside the Basílica de Sant Feliu.
- "L'alè del canvi" (The Breath of Change) at Sant Martí church (first time this venue is used), an immersive installation on climate change by UPC Design Master students with BBVA.
- "Unió Floral" at La Carbonera, a collaboration between CaixaBank and Fundació Ramon Noguera celebrating diversity.
- Calm Spaces at CaixaFòrum and Centre Cívic Barri Vell for neurodiverse visitors and families with specific needs.
Opening hours 2026
- Flors de Dia (Day Flowers): All venues, daily from 9.30 am to 9 pm.
- Flors de Nit (Night Flowers): 17 indoor venues open until 11 pm Sunday-Friday, and until midnight on Saturdays. A completely different experience with artificial lighting transforming the installations.
Flors de Nit is highly recommended to avoid peak hour crowds (11 am-2 pm and 4-7 pm) and for a far more intimate experience.
Essential venues
Girona Cathedral Steps
The most photographed spot in the festival. The Cathedral's 86 steps are adorned each year with a different floral installation — globally famous since their appearance in Game of Thrones. Arrive early morning or in the evening to avoid crowds.
Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs)
The 12th-century Romanesque-Arab building is one of the festival's most special floral containers. Light filtered through the dome over the water basins creates a unique atmosphere.
Sant Pere de Galligants Monastery
The 12th-century Romanesque cloister is one of the most impressive floral spaces in the entire route. Medieval architecture and ephemeral installations create a unique visual dialogue.
The Jewish Quarter (El Call)
The Call's alleyways — one of Europe's best-preserved Jewish quarters — become a labyrinth of colours and scents. Some private courtyards open to the public only during Temps de Flors.
Basílica de Sant Feliu
New for 2026: a Gaudí Year exhibition inside the Gothic-Baroque basilica of the Barri Vell.
Music and parallel activities
Around 60 concerts over nine days: chamber concerts in cloisters, choral performances in churches and instrumental ensembles in squares. The Girona A Cappella Festival runs alongside Temps de Flors, with international choral groups performing at Plaça de la Independència (free entry).
Other highlights: castellers (human towers), official guided tours (€12), the special "Women and Flowers" tour (14-15 May, 6 pm, €15), children's flower workshops and a floral shop window competition throughout the Barri Vell.
Practical tips
Best time to visit: Flors de Nit (Wednesday-Sunday from 9 pm) for the fewest crowds. Weekday mornings before 11 am are also excellent. Avoid Saturday and Sunday 11 am-2 pm and 4-7 pm.
